As many of you know, we began a new writing program this year developed by Lucy Calkins. The kids are really enjoying this new method for teaching writing, and I love that they ask to do writing every day! Dawn Plum from Central Office came by the classroom recently and sat in on our writing lesson. We realized last week that we made the first edition of the “Lucy News!” Thanks Ms. Plum for sharing our lesson and showing us off!
My classes are doing a great job learning the Essential Top Ten for Fifth Grade! If you haven’t received the information on this, it will be coming home in your child’s Thursday folder today. Remember that if you have any questions, you can always contact me!
The only issues that we have been having in classes this year are talking. It is so hard to get back into the “working quietly” mode at the beginning of the year. Please reinforce this concept at home, as we continue to work on it at school.
It’s almost time to begin a new year! I really enjoyed meeting everyone last night. For those who I did not get to talk to very much, I apologize. It got very hectic there for a little while. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone throughout the year. If you weren’t able to make it our Open House last night, please know that I am available to meet most days after or before school. I will send contact information home Monday! Until then, have a great weekend, and I’ll be waiting for my new kiddos Monday morning!
I am looking forward to our first day, and I hope that you are too! If you would like to bring in supplies when we meet, please feel free. I know that those backpacks (and kids’ backs) only hold so much! We will spend part of our first day sorting, labeling, and putting supplies away.
Look for that “parent homework” to come home so that we can get all of the forms and information updated. Also, please make sure to get the computer use agreement signed and in ASAP. We want to use technology as soon as we can, but that has to be on record first! Thanks.
It’s almost here! I am so excited about the new school year! I can’t wait to see everyone and get started on a great new year. Send me a beach picture so that I can include it on our website. If you don’t have one of your own, find one on the internet that you like! As soon as we get our computer usage agreements signed, I can start adding your pictures!
We have been so busy this year that I just realized that my poor blog has not been updated in quite some time! Hopefully you have kept up with us through Remind, emails, and other updates!
Our class has evolved so much this year, and we are continuing to work on those 6th grade independent skills. Yes, parents and guardians, we WILL be 6th graders soon. Hard to believe and a little scary too.
We had a great time at the Riverside Dinner Theatre last week. It was so much fun to see the kids faces as they took it all in-even the giant chandeliers and the baby grand piano! Tickets $14, bus ride $3, their expressions-PRICELESS!
A couple of updates for the time before Spring Break. We have our Caroline Middle School tour on Thursday, March 30th. We will be on our best behavior for that one! Getting called out before you even make it to middle school is not a good thing!!!
We also have the rock quarry trip coming up on April 6th. This is just a quick 1/2 day trip (the remaining $3 from the $20 fee), so students will follow their regular lunch routine that day. I’m super excited to see how the bus manages to get all the way down in the rock pit-and back out again. Let’s just hope we don’t get stuck!
Spring Break will be the week after that, and then we start the count down to SOL testing and the end of the year. I can’t believe it is getting this close. I’m not ready for my babies to leave me just yet!
Our class received a Donors Choose package earlier this year. Inside, we were excited to find NeuLog Sensors and USB Bridges. We have temperature probes and sensors for light, current, voltage, and magnetic fields! There are also 4 bridges that allow multiple groups to work that the same time. They collect the data and display it on the computer screen for us to analyze. They are super cool and very high tech! From measuring the water temperature of solutions to studying light, we are having a blast! While we haven’t had a lot of opportunity to use them yet this year, we are very thankful for our donors and Donors Choose for giving us this great opportunity. Stay tuned for cool pics and updates.
We have our first Benchmark tests coming up very soon. It’s hard to believe they are here already. Please make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and has breakfast the morning of the tests. The schedule is:
October 6th – Reading
October 12th – Science
Say it three times, really fast…Hotwheels Test Track Trials, Hotwheels Test Track Trials, Hotwheels Test Track Trials! Some say it’s the best day of the whole year! I hope not, because we have a lot of year left to go, but it is a lot of fun. The kids really use those force, energy, and motion concepts as they work through the four different tracks. From speed and friction to mass and potential energy, there is a test track that explores every aspect of SOL 4.2. We had a great time running the tests and analyzing our data after we were finished. Thanks Mr. Gregory for setting up the tracks for us!
We have finally gotten into the full swing of fifth grade. Please remind your student that self control in the classroom is a big key to success. That means only talking when it is appropriate, completing work on time, and staying focused on instruction. There are quite a few of our new fifth graders who need to work on self control. Let’s work together to help all of our students remain successful. If you have any questions, please contact me!
I can’t wait to see everyone at our Open House. Make plans to attend on August 10th! There will be lots of information available, so you don’t want to miss out! See you soon.
